Resource gathering actually relaxes me sometimes. I know many people find it boring but there’s something calming about building the economy slowly before chaos starts. Maybe it's because real life money is too hard to come by, so virtual resources feel easier 
I enjoy watching workers move around doing their thing while I plan my own strategy. The annoying part is when the enemy rushes you before your economy settles. That one can spoil the mood instantly. Some games even make gathering unnecessarily stressful with too many resource types.
