Earlier today, I was watching gameplay comparisons between Age of Empires IV and Total War series. They don't really compete directly because their styles are different 
AoE IV focuses more on real-time base building and quick decisions, while Total War mixes turn-based campaign with real-time battles. For me, I think AoE IV feels more straightforward. So, it depends on what kind of control and pacing you enjoy honestly.
